Administrative Team

Joseph R. Poletti

For 35 years my jobs as an educational professional have included teacher, instructional technology facilitator, state department consultant, university program administrator, athletic director, K-12 director of media/technology/other programs, and school administrator.  I am in my third year as principal of West Carteret High School.  I was the principal of Croatan High School for six years and East Carteret High School for two years.  

I am/have been a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the North Carolina School Library Media Association, the North Carolina Association of Education and Communication Technology, the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association, The North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association, and the North Carolina Association of School Administrators.  I was a member of the original advisory board for North Carolina Virtual Public School.  For seven years, I served on the board of directors for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and am a past president.  I am on the advisory boards for The North Carolina State Employees' Credit Union (Morehead City) and Saint Egbert Catholic School.  I am a long-serving member of the Carteret County Retired School Personnel Scholarship Committee.  I am a charter member of Coastal Bike Impact, a bicycle advocacy group.

I hold degrees from Appalachian State University, The Catholic University of America, and East Carolina University.  My Certificate of Advanced Studies is from East Carolina University.  My wife and I have three children, all of whom attended West Carteret High School.  One graduated from West; the other two, The North Carolina School of Science and Math.  They hold degrees from the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University (2), Northeastern University (2), and Saint Louis University.

I have been Carteret County Assistant Principal of the Year, Carteret County Principal of the Year, and NCHSAA Principal of the Year.  

Charles W. O'Neal, Jr.

I started my education career in 2001 teaching 3rd grade in Rockingham County and coaching middle school soccer and volleyball.  After 7 years in the elementary school, gaining math certifications and a Masters in Math education, I moved to Rockingham County High School to teach math and coach varsity soccer and volleyball for 5 years.  

In the summer of 2013, I moved my family to Carteret County, where I taught math at East Carteret High School and received a master’s in school administration.  In 2017, to have experience at all levels, I moved to Beaufort Middle School to teach 8th grade math and Math 1 and build their soccer program.  In January 2018, I accepted a position at WCHS as an Assistant Principal.  Looking forward to this upcoming year. Go Patriots!    

Dr. Heather Dietzler


For 25 years I have been dedicated to the students in Carteret County Schools.  My jobs as an educational professional have included teacher, assistant principal, principal, ESL coordinator, federal programs director and Chief Academic Officer.  I am/have been a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association, and the North Carolina Association of School Administrators. My teaching degree was earned at York College of Pennsylvania, master’s degree in administration at East Carolina University and doctoral degree in Supervision at East Carolina University.   

John Suralik

John Suralik serves as an assistant principal at West Carteret High School. He previously worked as an assistant principal in Craven County at Creekside Elementary and Havelock High School. He also served as a teacher/coach at Havelock High School, teacher at Early College EAST, and consultant for the National Writing Project. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of School Administration at East Carolina University. 

Mr. Suralik lives in Morehead City with his wonderful wife, Kat, and two children, Chloe and Johnny.
