West Carteret’s Thematic Approach

to Personalized Educational Opportunities




Small specialized learning communities (schools within schools) provide students personalized educational opportunities with high levels of built-in support. In SY 2019-2020, West Carteret High School will launch Innovative Pathways to Success as the umbrella under which diverse, specialized learning communities may flourish. Innovative Pathways to Success will debut with one specialized academy in SY 2019-2020. Two others will be in research and development to become operational the following year. Academies will have unique features; however, common threads are as follows: dedicated leadership team, specialized progression of courses, framework for year-long courses, flexible daily schedule, unique and targeted value-added topics/experiences, and a marketing arm.


QWest Academy will launch for select incoming freshmen in SY 2019-2020. It is a highly supportive graduation program that begins in the ninth grade with year-long math, year-long English, year-long earth science and year-long Freshmen Express. If suitable alternative does not exist, curriculum writing for Sophomore Express will occur. The priority with remaining electives in subsequent years will be to focus around a common strand such as ROTC, Trade and Industry, or Culinary Arts. Unique topics/experiences will include, but are not limited to, intensive and comprehensive school counseling, life skills, soft skills, field experiences, work-based learning, mentors, and guest speakers. Leadership will investigate and propose creative solutions to meet LEA and state graduation requirements. The leadership team will be spearheaded by John Suralik and Tiffany Mayo.


Leadership Lyceum will be in research and development in SY 2019-2020 with a launch projected for the following year. It is a rich, value-added program for high achievers. The hallmark will be supplemental honors level courses (Lyceum I, Lyceum II, Lyceum III, and Lyceum IV) and opportunities for service learning, leadership, and honors/AP credit.  Unique topics/experiences for Lyceum include, but are not limited to, the following: leadership, mini-courses, intensive and comprehensive school counseling, technical writing, public speaking, ethics, guest speakers, and capstone projects. Other unique features may include community service, CCC integration, and inter-disciplinary courses. The leadership team will be spearheaded by Chuck O’Neal and Tiffany Mayo.


CTE Career Academies will be in research and development in SY 2020-21 with a launch projected for Health Careers the following year. These academies will actualize CTE pathways in focused, experience-rich school-to-work contexts. Cornerstones will be intensive and comprehensive year-long courses TBD, internships, CCC integration, work-based learning, guest speakers, blended learning, and content-based Leadership Carteret models. John Suralik and Amy McKay will spearhead the leadership team.
