Welcome to Agricultural Education at West Carteret High School

Agriculture is essential.  Practically everything we eat, wear or live in depends on the agriculture industry. Think about it.

The purpose of Agricultural Education is to study how we feed, clothe and shelter people. You will learn about plants, animals, natural resources, tools and construction.  Agriscience Applications is the introduction and the opportunity to take a brief look at some of those things.  Other classes focus on specific aspects like animals, plants, and mechanics.

FFA is an important part of Agricultural Education.  The FFA is a student run organization that has all kinds of fun social activities and introduces members to a variety of agricultural and career experiences.  There are dozens competitions for students to compete in that range from animal judging to hunter skills to welding and giving speeches.  Their are leadership opportunities. There are parties and trips. You can do as much or as little as you are comfortable with.  Ask me, Ms. Hahn or a member about our next meeting and come check it out

This semester I teach Agriscience Applications and Agricultural Mechanics 1.  For the first time in West Carteret history, one of my Agriscience Applications classes will be completely "virtual" and all classes will have a large virtual element to them.  This will be an interesting semester, to say the least.

Find the course you are taking with me and go to the tab on the left.  Specifics about it will be found there.

A bit about me:

I have been teaching Agricultural Education (Ag Ed) for three years. Before that, I was a Marine Intelligence Officer. I spent 27 years in the Marines, with a break in the middle when I went to the reserves. During that period I was a police officer.  I was on the Special Response Team (SWAT) and trained as a School Resource Officer (SRO). I helped write some of the plans to protect our schools. In the Marines, I deployed to Iraq multiple times, Afghanistan, Somala, Panama. I was the Commanding Officer of the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, Central Command (FAST CENT) during the Arab Spring uprisings.  I retired in 2014 out of Camp Lejeune and we made this area our forever home. Teaching seemed like a perfect career after the Marines.  Most senior Marines spend most of their time leading and teaching younger Marines and there is a sense of community and pride that goes with both professions.

I have five children of my own, three still go to school in Carteret County. The two oldest are adults. My wife, Stacey Reynolds is an author.  She writes novels about a fictional family in Ireland called the "O'Brien Tales." The Crystal Coast appears heavily in her second novel, "A Lantern in the Dark."  I invite you to check them out, she's a great writer, I'm proud of her.

I am looking forward to getting to know my students.  I hope to get to know parents too.  I expect everyone to be active in their own learning, virtual or face to face.

Proud to be a Patriot!
