Ms. Edwards creative writing class and Ms. Swanger's art students collaborated to create a book of ekphrastic poetry!
What is ekphrastic poetry?
According to the Poetry Foundation, "Ekphrastic poetry is a vivid, imaginative description of or response to a work of visual art—such as a painting, sculpture, or photograph. It bridges visual and literary arts, allowing poets to amplify, interpret, or explore the emotions and narratives behind the artwork."

🧬🔬 Hands-On Science! 🔬🧬 Ms. Eichenauer’s AP Biology students spent the week exploring the world of biotechnology through exciting, real-world lab experiences.
Students conducted a restriction enzyme analysis using DNA fingerprinting and transformed bacteria by introducing a glow gene from a jellyfish.
Experiences like these bring advanced science concepts to life and showcase the innovative learning happening every day at West Carteret High School.

Big things are happening in our Media Center!
This week we added new projector screens and projectors, giving the space a fresh upgrade. Behind the scenes, our Patriot Press News team is already putting the new computer, green screen, and table setup to good use to create engaging content for our school community.
We’re also putting the final touches on our podcast studio, which will be ready in the coming weeks.
None of this would be possible without the support of the The Big Rock Foundation. We’re grateful for your investment in our students!

Today we celebrate the incredible administrative professionals who help keep West Carteret High School running each and every day. Their hard work, dedication, organization, and care support our students, staff, and families in countless ways.
Thank you to Laura Prestwich, Jodonna Parker, Ketina Pryor, and Jan Sherron for all you do for our school community. We appreciate your commitment to WCHS and the positive difference you make every day.

Good afternoon Patriots, here is your Weekly Patriot for April 13th. We look forward to welcoming students back from Spring Break as we focus on finishing the year with excellence.
I wanted to take a moment and recognize John Suralik, Maegan Harrison, and Mikaela Worsinger. April 6-10 was National Assistant Principals week. I am so grateful to the great leadership that our APs bring to serving the schoolhouse everyday! These three bring the best energy while setting high expectations. Thank you for being #TheBestofWest ❤️
A reminder that this Friday is an early release day as we will host our Prom. Prom tickets will be on sale April 13-16 (ending Thursday) via GoFan, with all tickets priced at $100. All school and band fees must be paid prior to purchase, and students should see Mrs. Mayo in the library for their access code.
Health updates from the Nurse:
Letters will be going out this week to those students that need an immunization for the 26-27 School year. Rising Seniors are required to receive the Meningitis A booster. The first MCV A was received at the beginning of 7th grade.
There will be a school based clinic conducted by the Carteret County Health Department on May 15, 2026. If you are interested in your child receiving the required immunization on that day, please complete the application included in your mailing.
Applications must be completed and returned by May 1, 2026.
Required immunization must be documented with the School Nurse no later than September 22, 2026, to avoid exclusion from school.
Students that do not meet the requirement will have to be excluded from school until the shot is received and documentation is presented to the school.
In Patriot Athletics: The week before Break our Baseball and Softball teams had big wins over Croatan. Soccer had a win over Jones Sr. and both Boys and Girls Track teams finished 2nd in the County Tournament. Come out this week as host Lacrosse on Tuesday, Track and Tennis on Wednesday, and Baseball/Softball and Soccer on Thursday.
Please enjoy the rest of your evening and as always, let us know if we can support you in any additional ways at the schoolhouse.
